More than a century ago, steam locomotives travelled from the coast across the plains of the Free State carrying miners, engineers and entrepreneurs chasing the dream of gold!
When gold was discovered in Johannesburg in 1886, the interior of South Africa was transformed within a very short space of time!
This new found goldfields needed a lifeline, a Free State connecting portion of the main line, running from Novalspont up to Vereeniging!
Along this historic corridor, railway sidings, whistle stop towns and communities were born. One of them was Virginia – a siding settlement that was formed in 1890.
Today, this story forms the foundation of the Matjhabeng Heritage Trails.
